Toxic Citrus Deodorant
Unfortunately, about 8 months in to my new blissful homemade deodorant life, I started getting a painful rash on my armpits. Once I had a gallon of the stuff, it was time to make a real mimicked deodorant by adding coconut oil to the baking soda and cornstarch mixture. I accidentally added non-aluminum baking powder instead of baking soda… The deodorant is rising and foaming/fizzing. If you whip the coconut oil with a hand mixer or kitchen aid and then beat in the baking soda you get a lighter creamier mix that works well in the kind of deodorant dispenser they put gel deodorant in. See, coconut oil melts at about 72 degrees F — the temperature of a moderately warm summer day.
I`m willing to try making a few formulations that include a lot more moisturizers, such as shea butter, but the fact is baking soda is abrasive and also a necessary ingredient, at least for me. I`ve also heard that using magnesium oil as a deodorant works well, and I`ve heard that magnesium chloride is less irritating than the salts used in salt rock deodorant, so I`ll also give that a try.
I had tried the crystal, which did nothing for me. I didn`t have all the ingredients, but I mixed up the coconut oil and baking soda and it really worked! So even if you`re currently at your ideal weight and have great skin and oral health, there are still significant reasons you should consider consuming coconut oil on a daily basis. One important thing to remember is there will be some adjustment if you`re switching from an antiperspirant to this homemade recipe-because this isn`t an antiperspirant! He won`t let me make him his own deodorant yet, but maybe if I make it smell like bacon…. Try using any essential oil scent you like, but pick something that smells good mixed with coconut—the coconut oil contributes scent, too. Some brands of coconut oil I like are from Trader Joe`s, Aldi, Tropical Traditions, Nutiva, Spectrum, and Nature`s Way. I found an article by Dr. Christine Farlow, outlining the 7 ingredients that you should avoid in your deodorant.
Honestly, most homemade deodorants are made up of the same ingredients In this recipe I just adjusted the ratio of baking soda to arrowroot powder until I had a balance that worked for my husband. You can use a stick deodorant anywhere and needn`t worry about inhaling the fumes. From my experience, this deodorant should last about 6 months, possibly even longer.
I`ve been using this type of
home made deodorant
for about three years. At the start I developed itchy red bumps under my armpits, though didn`t get the peeling you`ve described. After much experimenting I found that modifying the dry ingredients to 1 part baking soda to 3 parts arrowroot/cornstarch fixed the problem.
I`ve been no poo for a year and a half and have wanted to try natural deodorant. Once the shea butter and coconut oil melt, add the the beeswax and stir frequently until all the ingredients are liquid. But I could see how more sensitive skin might have problems with this much baking soda. The ones shown in the picture can be ordered from I make and sell a number of natural products and anytime I make a foot balm, sunscreen, deodorant etc. Also, bentonite is nonstaining and a pretty neutral color - not sure how green clay would fare! Usage of natural deodorant in these days is getting more
almost with all people.
Hence, you don`t really have to worry about an increased amount of sweat causing a stronger odor if you are using a deodorant that works. Another
cream, Osmia is unique in that it includes Fuller`s earth clay to help control odor and moisture without blocking your sweat glands like aluminum. Coconut oil also works for athlete`s foot type problems and any groin fungal type problems, not to mention wonderful for dry skin. They don`t hold very much, so I emptied the deodorant tube I`ve been using and filled it, too. Your deodorant will be like a paste, so just scoop some out with your finger to apply.
My dropper lids popped straight off (literally pouring oil into the pot) and I ended up with VERY pretty-smelling deodorant, slightly softer than I prefer because of the extra oil content. I`ve also read about spray-on deodorant just on an as-needed basis…basically a TTO spritz that will help take away the stinkiness from bacteria. Readers, I`d love to hear in the comments about your experiences with this recipe and even other natural or homemade deodorants! Extra virgin olive oil has antifungal properties like coconut oil so I don`t see why it wouldn`t work. We have been using this natural deodorant since we found out we were allergic to corn. I make a similar deodourant at home, the only difference being mine doesn`t have bentonite clay (which I`m definitely going to try).
I have tried many different homemade deodorants and kept having horrible reactions or they didn`t work. Thanks for the recipe, I`m going to try yours because the deo I made didn`t have beeswax in it and I had to store it in the fridge. To begin your journey into the joys of home-made cosmetics, try this deodorant recipe - with the essential oils, it will smell so much nicer than commercial deodorants! Yes, if you add 2 teaspoons of beeswax pastilles it will firm enough to put in a tube.
